Agave Ferment Filtrate
INCI: Saccharomyces/ Agave Americana Leaf Ferment Filtrate & Leuconostoc /Radish Root Ferment Filtrate
Use: 1-10 %
Description:
Agave americana, often called the "century plant," is a large, striking succulent native to Mexico and the United States. It forms a large rosette of thick, fleshy, blue-gray to gray-green leaves that typically flowers after 10-30 years, depending on growing conditions. It is typically harvested before flowering when the plant’s stored carbohydrates are at their peak.
The agave grows in tropical and subtropical arid environments where it is regularly exposed to extreme drought and harsh temperatures. To endure, the agave plant produces what are called Heat Shock Proteins (HSP’s). The HSP’s help prevent the agave’s DNA from unfolding and breaking down under stress and signals the plant to initiate DNA repairs.
Bioactive constituents:
Heat Shock Proteins. Saponins and Steroidal Saponins, ((mainly hecogenin and tigogenin as well as inulin) Polysaccharides. Fructans. Flavonoids. Phenolics. Antioxidants. Triterpenes. Coumarins. Minerals (Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, Zinc, Iron, Copper). Vitamins (A, C, E, and B-complex).
Skin benefits:
Increased Resilience: Though not yet research proven it is believed that HSP’s enhance the skin's ability to withstand the stress of heat and cold, increasing resilience and reducing damage caused by extreme temperatures. HSPs are proven to promote cell survival and tissue repair, accelerate the healing process, reduce scarring and help protect collagen and elastin fibers from damage, while the coumarins and phenolics in this ingredient are strongly UV protective and mildly antiseptic.
Skin Soothing: The anti-inflammatory properties of triterpenes, flavonoids, saponins and steroidal saponins may help to calm irritated or inflamed skin. This could be beneficial for individuals with redness or minor skin irritations.
Skin Conditioning: The polysaccharides and fructans contribute significantly to skin conditioning, leaving the skin feeling soft and smooth.
Hydration Support: The polysaccharides and fructans contribute to skin hydration by attracting and retaining moisture and forming a barrier that helps slow trans-epidermal water loss.
Synergistic Combos:
Ceramides, ferments, Niacinamide.
Multi-functional ingredients:
Saccharomyces (used as a fermentation agent) enhances cellular respiration, supporting optimal skin function and energy production. Its bioactive metabolites—including B vitamins, amino acids, and beta-glucans—help nourish, hydrate, and strengthen the skin. Additionally, its postbiotics contribute to a balanced microbiome, enhance ceramide production, neutralize free radicals and help regulate melanin.
Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate (used as a preservative) is a natural antimicrobial and antifungal peptide-based preservative made by fermenting Raphanus sativus (radish) roots with Leuconostoc, a lactic acid bacteria found in kimchi. Beyond preservation, it offers notable skin benefits, including pore-cleansing, skin brightening, and hydration. Additionally, its probiotic-derived compounds help support a healthier skin microbiome.
